Pre-Move Checklist

By The Edmonton Storage Guy

Following the simple steps outlined below will help alleviate some of the stress of moving day and allow you to feel comfortable that you havent forgotten anything, while ensuring that your moving day is as stress-free as possible.

Utilities: Have you arranged to have the utilities turned on at your new house? Have you stopped all utilities at the old house, taken final meter readings, and informed the utility companies of your move so that they can adjust your final bill and have it forwarded to your new address?

Services: Contact your bank, cell phone, cable and other service providers who regularly bill you at your old address. Submit a request with your local postal office to have your mail forwarded. Make sure youve picked up any dry cleaning or other items you may have recently sent out.

Security Deposits: Have you fulfilled all the requirements for the return of your security deposit? Have you paid the security deposit (if any) for your new house? Have you clearly explained and documented any repairs required in your old house?

Documents: Whenever you move, you need to get a new drivers license with your new address on it; check to see how much time you have to get your license transferred over. You should have a collection of instruction manuals and other documentation for the equipment and appliances that are staying with the old house. Leave these in a convenient location for the new occupants to find.

Final Walkthrough: Is everything packed and clearly labeled? If you are leaving furniture, have you checked that there's nothing in, underneath, behind or on top of it? Has everything youre not taking with you been recycled, donated to charity, or properly disposed of?

Once you're sure you've taken care of everything on your list, you can move on to your new house knowing that you're starting your new life without fear of disruption, identity theft, or the need to contact the new occupants of the house with any problems. You'll also be able to relax and enjoy the move itself.
