Importance of Location to Craft Selling

By Geoffrey Higgins

So during the past couple of years, me and my girlfriend sold some of her creations in the various craft shows that are held in the greater Florida area. The business started out queasy at first, as we earned decent but undesirably low income from the project. Over time, we began to get the hang of it, and now we continuously make room in our schedules so that we have more time to attend other craft shows.

To recap, my girlfriend's talent lies with the ability to shape beautiful jewelry from very cheap materials. Even though it's not very expensive, the designs were clearly made with a definite fashionable eye. It is the perfect accessory for girls staying on the beach; expensive paraphernalia are kind of stupid in the beach, after all.

Selling her crafts were most challenging during the first few months that we tried it. While I had good business sense to set things up right, and while she quickly gained a loyal group of customers that regularly bought from her, the income generated was still insufficient. We put in a lot of work for the products; we prepare a large stock beforehand, I arrange deals with event organizers and such, and we spend days manning the booth itself. Practically the only thing that kept our act together was the fact that we were doing it together.

We eventually started to fare better as we began to go to the juried craft fairs. The number of people coming was simply higher, and thus we generated more sales. And as we began to mingle with the fellow booths, as well as more experienced organizers, we began to realize another fact; location is important for what we're selling.

So I went to this website that lists down all dates and venues for Festivals and Fairs here in Florida, and chose the ones that are closest to the beach. This limited our choices a bit, but as we are close to the optimal place where the trinkets will be worn, I noticed a significant markup in profit. All in all, this was a good move for us.
