A Great Birthday for a Great Father

By BasketGirl

My dad's birthday was coming up and we weren't sure what to get him. He's not very good at telling us what he wants. My brother, sister and I looked around and couldn't decide what to do for him. We ended up finding out about a golf outing, that had old pros that he could play with.

As soon as we found out details, we knew it was the perfect gift. My father loves golf; he plays every day! If he's not playing, he's watching it on television. He says he's "breaking in" his driver, but we know better. I think he's addicted! So we signed him up for the tournament, and he was completely surprised. He had no idea, and was thrilled!

The day of the tournament rolls around, and he and his friends are having a great time playing. It's an all day event; the tournament itself was followed by dinner and an auction. They enjoyed the fantastic food at the dinner; he seemed so happy and grateful for such a special gift. My mother wasn't as thrilled with the dinner itself as my dad was, but she got her fill at the dessert table. I know she had two pieces of cake PLUS a slice of cheesecake; she said it was all so tempting!

My mother ate her $25 worth of desserts throughout the evening. She said the food wasn't as tempting as everything on the dessert table. She went along over to the auction table carrying what looked like three slices of cake, maybe even one slice of cheesecake.

My father placed a bid on quite a few things. He placed a bid on an autographed picture of an athlete. He placed a bid on a couple of shirts, and some other stuff. He then saw a weed whacker that he's been wanting for the property in the south, so he placed a bid. He was more excited than I've ever seen him when his bid remained the highest.

My mom does the same thing as my dad only she does it with gift baskets. I remember her stating that this place had so many different types of gift baskets to choose from. She seemed to look at wine gift baskets the most. My dad loves wine and food, therefore she wanted to get him something he truly loved for his birthday. She bid on several gift baskets full of assorted wines and meats. She wanted to buy a gift basket for my father, as well as for my relatives, during the upcoming holiday season. In my opinion, it's a very good idea for the money.

The actual auction comes around and the auctioneer steps to award the prizes to the highest bidders during the silent auction, and to also begin the regular auction. My mother wins her prize that she had bid on earlier. Then once the silent auction distribution is finished, the real auction begins. The first thing that?s auctioned off is the weed whacker! My father bid on it, but that was only to create a starting bid. He didn?t bid any higher for the weed whacker and the auctioneer ended up bidding on it and winning it himself. My father was bummed; he had high hopes to win that thing. Although, he had a fun day with his friends and that?s all that mattered in the end.
