Who was Eleanor Rigby

By John Savage

Who was the person the Beatles sang about who died in the church and was buried, and nobody came?

A rather depressing song I think and not one that we had grown to get used to from the Beatles.

Well now, the song was real enough, but I have often wondered if there was a real Eleanor Rigby, or not.

Well now, as a matter of good fortune I recently had the chance to play a few gigs in Liverpool, and during my free time I decided to see just what I could find out about Eleanor Rigby.

To get started I went along to the local library and after digging out a few pieces of information I pointed the car towards a suburb of Liverpool known as Woolton.

When I arrived in Woolton I straight away visited the local church, and their in the churchyard my eye was drawn to one particular tombstone.

Yes, you guessed it, the tombstone had the inscription Eleanor Rigby.

Having located such an interesting gravestone I then began to ask myself if any of the Beatles lived anywhere nearby. And guess what? As a child John Lennon used to live in Menlove Avenue, which is very close to the church.

Now, as a child I remember playing all sorts of games in our local churchyard. Games such as hide and seek, hiding behind the tombstones and so on. Great fun, albeit a little spooky!

Therefore it is not unreasonable to assume that John Lennon also probably often went into this churchyard, and would have seen the headstone dedicated to Eleanor Rigby.

Now unfortunately I only had a couple of days in Liverpool so I was not able to dig any deeper into this, but I intend to return soon and continue my research.

But I will be back. This is becoming very interesting to me, and I want to know more about Eleanor Rigby, and the other names that appear on her tombstone.

If you would like to hear from me again when I have found out some new information on this then please click on the link at the bottom of the page. This will take you to a seperate page and you will find my email address near the bottom. Just send me a brief email asking to be kept updated and I will do so whenever I find new items of interest.
