Make a list of your dreams, goals, and desires. What do you really want to be, do, and have. Do you want to be a great public speaker, climb a mountain, learn to fly an airplane, own a new luxury car? What gets you excited? What gets your "juices flowing"? What are some of the things, that if you dug way back in your memory banks you could remember you truly wanted when you were a child and uninfluenced by other people or limiting beliefs. Make a list of some of those things that you remember, the ones that still get you really excited just to think about.
From the list you have compiled choose some of the items which you believe you can accomplish in the next year, three years, and five years. Now write the number 1, 3, or 5 next to those things you really want to go for. Don't be afraid to choose a couple which seem out of reach right now. Do this for each of the one year, three year, and five year periods.
You'll write a set of goals for each of the one year, three year, and five year time increments. Using 3 x 5 index cards has always been my favorite medium, they are easy to carry and also have enough space to write several goals on each. You'll write your goals so that they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time referenced. This is the SMART method.
Be certain that you will have to really make things happen to attain your goals. If you are setting goals which are easily attainable, you'll be wasting your time and the tremendous tools you are learning. If you're not really working and stretching a little to make your goals, you'll get there without using these methods. Challenge yourself and this system to make it work.
Write your goals as if they have already happened, one year from now. For example, today is September 30, 200__, and I now have $_______, in the bank from my new business, I now drive a _______, (or) I am now living in a wonderful __bedroom __bath home with a __ car garage in _______,(city) ________,(state). The reason for doing this will become more clear as we go through the remainder of the exercise.
Don't use phrases like, by September 30, of 20__, I will have $ ______ in the bank or I will be driving _______, or I will be living in a tremendous ___bedroom, ___ bathroom home in ______,(city) _____,(state).
Write out your goals for each of the one year, three year, and five year periods, and be certain to write each in the present tense. Once you have done this, look for the next article in the series which is about bringing your emotions to your goal setting exercises. This method will assist you in bringing your goals into reality more quickly.
