USA Visitors: Summer Driving Tips

By Suchi V

US visitors get ready for short and long driving trips this summer in United State of America. They are a great way to get away and have a fun summer. Follow some basic tips to keep you safe and comfortable on your trip.

1. It is important to have the manufacturer recommended tire pressure in your tires. You can find the recommended amount in the doorjamb on the driver's side. Correct tire pressure ensures proper contact between the tire and the road. Tires loose air pressure every month, so check them often. It is also the easiest way to improve your car's fuel economy.

2. Make sure you do an oil change before you start your trip. Check your owner's manual to see what oil is recommended in each weather condition. Summer weather may need a thicker type of oil. Also make sure the coolant/antifreeze ratio is 50-to-50.

3. If needed top off all the fluids and examine the belts and hoses for cracks and wear. If your battery is between 3-5 years old get it tested. It can be strained in hot weather and it is safer to replace it than be stranded in the middle of nowhere.

4. Auto Club membership can help you in an emergency. Carry the card on your trip so you have access to them when needed. Your car may also be covered under a manufacturer's plan during roadside emergencies.

5. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle. Stock it with basic tools you may need, food, water, food supplies and a first aid kit. You can buy pre assembled kits in an auto store.

6. A small cooler packed with food and drinks can be very handy especially if you are travelling with kids. Keep it stocked and replenish it at gas stations along the way. Avoid salty snacks and sodas, they can dehydrate you.

7. Always obey the rules of the road. Do not drive if you are sleepy or tired. Use seatbelts always and strap children in car seats.

An investment in a trusted visitor health can cover you for medical expenses from illnesses or injuries. Have a great summer vacation!
