Training Your Dog To Tell Time When You Don't Want To

By Jonethan Bass

We've all seen or heard about the stereotype of a dog waiting right at the door when its owner returns home. Actually, many people have had these kind of dogs. I know, it sounds so unreal!

The dog who wakes his owner up no matter what time of year it is. You fed him every morning when you got up to go running in the summer, which created a habit for him in the winter to get you up at that same time (even though you used to sleep in then)!

This is known by dog trainers who have experience; the value of fitting your schedule and your dog's together. Dogs thrive on routine and structure and these pets will develop exactly that by the habits that are first set when you started your life with your pet. This means that if you do certain things - like walks - at the same time each day for a couple weeks, your dog will grow accustomed to that routine and will expect it to be the same daily so be prepared! The one responsible for your dog waking you up so early in the winter is you - not your pup. Perhaps you are destined to be early risers but if you don't plan on it don't go by that schedule in the first place!

You're the one who will have trained him that he should get up and eat at five every morning; it wasn't your dog's idea. It may be that an early start is best for both of you, but let it be by design, not by accident.
