Stop Drinking Now...Alcohol and Mixed Messages

By Ed Philips

It is difficult to understand that if alcohol is so damming then why the hell is it legal and how on earth can it be accepted in certain social groups. On the other hand our society at large does try and enforce limitations on this and other unhealthy habits, but they just don't seem able to go the whole way. Alcohol can be dangerous in both small and large amounts and there is evidences that support these statements, but our health just does not always seem to be a major issue when taxes are involved.

The rate that alcohol has spread through our society is quite alarming really and long gone are the days that somebody could only purchase liquor in a liquor store and be seen leaving with their purchase discretely in a brown paper bag. Today alcohol is available in any store, club, hotel or sporting event and in certain countries you can now see kids out drinking in the street and they don't bother about hiding it in a brown paper bag. It is quite sad really how are society depends more and more on alcohol and unfortunately they are getting younger and younger every day.

Now with a simple trip to the grocery store, or at a stop to get gas at the local convenience store, an adult can make a legal purchase of anything from cans to bottles, cases and in some locations even kegs of whatever alcoholic beverages they may want.

What makes the situation even worse and that tries to convince us that alcohol is socially acceptable is advertising. Advertising methods are used to the limit not just to sell us the stuff but also to make us think that it will make us feel better, which is certainly not the case. You will find alcohol advertised anywhere from the cinema to our own television, so they mange to poison as many people as possible with their marketing lies.

Something certainly needs to be done to give alcohol a bad reputation and I certainly don't think that alcohol should be related to Sporting events or sporting stars. One idea that has worked in some European countries is to create a publicity campaign that is broadcast on the TV, showing us the real dangers involved when consuming alcohol.
