Do you think that you have what it takes to become an author? Writing a book takes a lot of time and dedication, which is why there are so few writers out there. The rest of us may have an idea or a half-finished novel, but we don't have the time to finish it. Until you are published there is no way of know whether you can support yourself with your writing, so in the meantime you plug away at your day job and madly type up a page or too of your soon-to-be bestseller before going to bed.
Of course, just finishing the book is not enough. Now you have to proofread it a hundred times to make sure there are no errors or spelling mistakes. Each time you find an error you need to rewrite the page and reprint it, and then proofread it again. This doesn't sound too promising does it?
Who knew that writing a book would be so hard? You would think that once you are done writing the book that would be it; someone would take it out of your hands, give you a check and tell you that they would take it from there. Instead there is more work.
If you have finished your book, you still have a lot of work left ahead of you. The next step after editing and rewriting is to get your book out there for people to read. You want to get it to every publisher you can think of that might be interested in publishing it. This is the hard part, and the part most don't consider when they set out to write a book. The rejection will come, and it will be painful. You may get published, but you can expect a lot of rejection slips before your manuscript falls into the right hands.
In the event that there are no intelligent publishers out there to print your book, you can consider self-publishing. This involves taking care of, and paying for printing, marketing and distributing the book. Again this is going to take more work on your part as well as a lot of your money. The bonus is that no one else gets a cut when your book starts flying off the shelves.
