Running Your Own Business - The Pros And Cons

By Simon M Skinner

When it comes to running your own business, it is generally accepted that you will have more "ups" than "downs." Most people like the idea of being their own boss. The money is usually better and you aren't answering to anyone, however one downside can be having to deal with employees.

When I first started running my own company I certainly wasn't aware of all the screening processes that I could use before actually deciding whether to employ someone. Nowadays there are even more concerns, such as Homeland Security and Immigration issues.

For instance by running a pre-employment screening and employee background check I avoid the issue of inadvertantly employing someone who is in the country illegally.

Another concern is crime. I dont want to hire somebody with a criminal background, especially someone who may have stolen from a previous employer, and here's food for thought - if I do not run a background check and an employee commits a crime whilst he is working I could be held liable!

A company that I trust to run all of my necessary employee background checks is MacDataAdvantage.com. They have a great list of screenings that I can choose from, if I'm not sure which ones I need to run.

When I use MacDataAdvantage.com I can find allof the relevant information on a potential employee I can even check to make sure their social security number is valid, I can even run a credit check.

A while ago I was checking out a potential employee who would be driving a company vehicle, everything looked great on their application until I ran a pre-employment screening and discovered all was not as it had seemed.

This potential emplyee had a long history of traffic accidents. If I had emplyed this person my company's insurance policy would have increased significantly. I didn't employ this person and once again MacDataAdvantage.com saved me a whole heap of trouble!
