Golden Retriever: Start Training Them Young

By Carol Matthews

Golden Retriever training is especially relevant because the breed is one that likes to be around people and to ensure that they enjoy their time with others, they need to be given proper Golden Retriever potty training. With the proper Golden Retriever training, you can ensure that the Golden is socialized as well as knows where to go in order to relieve himself. It also means having to devote a lot of time and exercising greater amount of patience in teaching your pet the proper place where he needs to go in order to go potty.

Golden Retriever potty training requires that you teach your pet in a firm manner and consistency is the key to ensure that your pet does not lose his focus on learning where to potty and instead remains interested in learning the appropriate behavior.

The first thing that you need to consider is to confine your puppy or dog so that potty training can be made simpler, and the crate or cage is the best as well as most effective place in which to confine the Golden.

Although some dog owners shirk from the thought of crate training their Golden Retrievers, it is nevertheless, a recommend means of teaching your dog where to eliminate. By repeatedly showing him the right place where he can do his potty, you will find that this means of Golden Retriever potty training will show excellent results. In fact, you must also let him know clearly as well as unambiguously that you recognize the fact that he has done his potty in the correct place.

Thus, giving him some form of treat when he eliminates in the correct place can help reinforce the habit, or you can praise him and also allow him enough time to assimilate his new instructions. By forming a regular pattern that he should follow at all times, you will stand a better chance of your Golden Retriever potty training efforts bearing fruit and also prevent accidents from occurring. In fact, the fewer accidents your Golden Retriever makes during his training, the easier it will be for you to successfully potty train him.

If you want the Golden Retriever potty training to succeed, you can give your puppy or dog more freedom once he has eliminated and also supervise his free time to dissuade him from indulging in inappropriate elimination. Also, by anticipating his desire to go potty you can improve your Golden Retriever training efforts by deciding on the most appropriate length of time to confine him, and the rule of thumb is to confine him according to his age in months.

You can also use simple aids such as placing a newspaper where you want him to eliminate, or even use a litter box for the same purpose.

However, despite your best efforts and also those of the Golden Retriever, accidents will occur every once in a while and these should be accepted for what they are. The best time to correct these errant behavior incidences is when you catch your Golden in the act, because dogs cannot remember things that occurred more than a few moments ago and thus, reprimanding him after the fact will not have any effect on his improper behavior.
