Are you annoyed because the garage door isn't working? Don't head out and replace it right away. First try a few of these easy repair ideas that could possibly be all that's required to get your garage door functioning properly once more.
In many instances, some small maintenance tasks could keep you from spending money by preventing you from buying a completely new door. Here's a few things to look into to find out if your garage door could be fixed:
Check the metal tracks. Garage doors run with a track system that allows the door to lift up and tuck away into the garage. Check out the metal tracks and make sure they're still properly tightened to their supports.
You'll also want to tighten up any nuts or bolts that seem to be loose. There may even be some that need replaced.
Scrub the tracks and rollers. Often a door will not function as efficiently when the rollers are filled with gunk. Look them over and wash them if required.
If you notice that your tracks and rollers have a substance that looks like sludge, then try using some dish soap to clean them out with. Once you get them all cleaned up and the debris is taken away, you'll find that the door will run a whole lot smoother. Also, using some kind of lubricant oil can really help as well.
Examine the springs. Many garage doors utilize tension springs. Look these over to discover if they are in sound condition. You might only have to reset the tautness for them to function correctly. If they are in poor condition, it will be better to get some new ones.
Also check the pulley systems that go with the springs. Make sure they're in good shape as well. If they're not looking good, then be sure to replace them.
If your door has only one tension spring that's located in the center of your track system and you think it needs to be repaired, call a professional to come do it. With the tremendous amount of tension that the spring holds, it would be too dangerous to try to repair or replace it yourself.
Take the time to check out the hardware on the door and the track system. In some cases just a loose hinge can cause all the trouble. If there is something that needs to be tightened, do it. Also, replace hinges on the door if you think they may be the problem.
Check the door opener itself. If you have an electric garage door opener, then check your door opening device. It may just need new batteries. If it needs to be replaced completely, check with the manufacturer for the door opener you have to see if a replacement is available.
If the garage door isn't functioning well, determine if there might be something that you can easily repair before you decide to replace the door completely. If you do need a new door, hire a pro to install it for you.
