Consistency is Very Important in the Dog Training Process

By Johnathan Bash

Dog training isn't always simple. However, it is definitely worth taking the time to do even though it requires lots of effort and time.

It's a common tale - the dog who is very well behaved until dinner time when he morphs into an obsessive scrap-scrounger, acting as it is his sole mission in life! The dog runs circles around the table, lays on your feet, or puts his face in your lap as he begs for just one piece of food to drop from your fork.

It is food and he desires it - no matter what it could be.

You say to yourself that you would never let your dog do that and wonder how this otherwise wonderful animal turned into such a monster at the dinner table.

Only once does he have to go through this experience of receiving a taste of food from the dinner table and he will begin his begging mission for life. That one occurrence allows for him to develop an association between his food and table food.

Dogs can not survive on leftover food yet they can consume much of the same diet as people - so extra food given won't be an issue. If you feed him at dinnertime he will make the connection between the two.

If you want to share some of your food with your dog you just need to follow two simple rules:

Always give it to him in his own dish.

Don't give him anything until you have finished eating.

Following the two steps will make the future easier. If you give him sporadic rewarded goodies, while avoiding scraps, as the sole item not on his plate you can support healthy practices and avoid allowing him the option to have unhealthy practices.

It's always going to be easier to make a good habit than break a bad one.
